Reading: please note all links and instructions for apps are found in the first post at the bottom of the web page.
- Read to Self or Someone: (10 min) read a good fit book (a book that they do not have to sound out too many words), or a book on Epic.
- Listen to Reading: (10 min) Epic, Tumblebooks or SORA: you will find the directions in the attached documents at the bottom of the web page. Please note that Epic is only available during school hours.
I Spy Non-fiction text features: Watch the attached you tube video to see what non-fiction text features are. Can you find some text features in your books at home or some books you might read on Epic this week? Be on the look-out for non-fiction text features!
Enjoy some non-fiction reading: Click on the PDF posted above to read and learn facts about 4 different animals. If you are using an iPad, you can email the link to yourself and download it to iBooks for ease of use. If you use it in Windows, you can click the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner and use the directional arrows to read each slide. Each animal has a little comprehension quiz at the end. If your child struggles with reading, please read it out loud to them, and see if they can answer the questions at the end.
*************************************************************************************
- Log the books they are reading at home on their reading log sheet in their "at home duo tang". If the sheet should become full you can add a homemade sheet of your own and set it up in a similar way.
- Respond to Reading: (10 min-depending) using the Connections page or Reading Response page in the "at home duo tang" and have your child do a written response or discuss it orally with them.
- Sight Words: (5 min) Students have their own individual sight words they are working on at home on a cue card in their agendas or on Freshgrade Connect for Mrs. Steeves' class. Use the "At home duo tang" Word search sheet, Write and Roll, Rainbow Write sheets etc. for them to practice, or make some cue cards of your own and have them play matching games with them. Students should be able to read their words without hesitation and spell them correctly before they are ready for new words. Please email me a picture of their cue card with 2 check marks beside each word they can read and spell, and I will send new words to replace them on Fridays.
Phonics: Please note all links and instructions for apps are found in the first post at the bottom of the web page.
(15 min) Vowel Teams/ complex vowels: This week we will continue to learn about vowel teams. When 2 vowels are together, the first one says it's name and the other is silent. When we spell words with "oa" or "ow" they make the long "o" sound. Watch the attached video to hear the sound in words and the vowel team rule.
- Watch the video below and make a t-chart (analogy chart)-- practice writing the word on the correct side and underlining the vowels on the chart
- Play the Squiggle Park app each day for some time, this is a very useful tool for the students to practice their sight words, and phonics (see link at the bottom of the web page in the phonics section--students passwords should be in their agendas)
Writing: If you have not drawn and coloured a snowman and described him using sentences, please complete that activity this week. The goal is that students use proper sentence structure and include some descriptive words (using their senses) to describe their snowman.
Here is an example:

Snowman
Hi my name is Winter and I am a snowman. I am made of two round, lumpy balls of snow. My green hat is covered in snow. I have a soft, knitted, red scarf around my neck. My eyes, nose and mouth are made of black stones. My home is in a quiet backyard. I really like being a snowman because it is peaceful outside.
Steps for writing:
1. Draw and colour your snowman.
2. Use the title and beginning sentence above. Pick a name for your snowman.
3. Describe 4 things about your snowman using colour, shape, or size words etc.
4. Attempt an ending. You can use mine as an example (do you like being a snowman?)
5. With a parent use the attached editing checklist and try to find a few spots that need fixing up.
6. Write a good copy and bring to school when we return. (Don't forget to put your name on it and put it in your agenda pocket.)

Some examples of procedural writing are recipes, and instruction manuals to build or make a new toy.
Day 1 --watch the video about procedural writing
Day 2 -- Draw the steps of how to make hot chocolate on a page you have divided in 4 parts
Day 3-- Write the steps in sentence form
Day 4-- Edit with a parent and write a good copy to pass in upon return to school.
Day 5-- Enjoy some hot chocolate by following all your instructions from your writing!
Enrichment--choose your own "How To" writing topic and write and additional piece

Language Arts:
Reading: please note all links and instructions for apps are found in the first post at the bottom of the web page.
- Fiction or Non-fiction: watch the videos above to learn the difference between fiction and non-fiction books. We will be starting a non-fiction report soon after we return to school!
- Read to Self or Someone: (10 min) read a good fit book (a book that they do not have to sound out too many words) and/ or assigned book on Epic.

- Respond to Reading: (10 min-depending) using the Connections page or Reading Response page in the "at home duo tang" and have your child do a written response or discuss it orally with them. Some other suggested questions to ask might be:
- How is this story different than the story we read yesterday and how is it the same?
- When I read this part of the story what do you (visualize) see in your head?
- What are some words the author uses that helps you to visualize the story in this part?
- Can you draw a picture of this part and write a sentence or two about what is happening?
- How might the character of felt in this part of the story, why do you think so?
- Listen to Reading: (10 min) Listen to the Non-fiction book about Dolphins above on Monday. Epic, Tumblebooks or SORA: you will find the directions in the attached document in last week's post. Please note that Epic is only available during school hours.

When we spell words with "ee" or "ea" they make the long "e" sound. Watch the attached videos to hear the sound in words and the vowel team rule.
- Option 1: Then use magnetic letters from home or alphabet letters cards that you make yourself or print (see file above) with the "Make Say Check Mix Write Sheet". Read the word to your child, they make it, say it, check it, mix it, and do it again 2 more times.
Practice these "ea" words by cutting out or using magnetic letters with "ea" cards: flea, sea, tea, teach, reach, read, meat, meal, seal, teal, peak and heal.
Wednesday/ Thursday
Practice these "ee" words by cutting out or using magnetic letters with "ee" cards: feet, need, seem, free, meet, keep, speed, peek, street, week, see, bee, heel, green, sheep, and teeth.
Friday have the students just try to write the words without making them first ( do a few of each)
- Option 2: If these phonics lessons seem to challenging for your child, have them listen to the videos and lessons above and then focus their time on completing lessons in the Squiggle Park app. Please see directions for logging in above and your child's agenda and Freshgrade Connect for Mrs. Steeves class.
- Extra Challenge:
b) Homophones or Homonyms are words that sound the same and are spelled differently, can you spot any homonyms in our vowel team lists this week? Send a picture of them to me and draw and colour a quick picture of what they mean. Here is one that is not on the list: to (go to the store), two (the number two), and too (that means also or very).

Writing:
Monday:
Finish your snowman picture from last Friday. Complete the "Snowy Senses" sheet orally or written on a separate sheet of paper. Use your senses to describe snow (see attached document).
Tuesday:
Watch video about descriptive sentences, and then fix up these sentences from the document "Sentence Stretch" by adding 1 or 2 descriptive words. Write the new sentences on a sheet of your own, or do the activity orally with a parent. If you write the sentences out, put them in your agenda bag to pass in upon return.
Wednesday:
On Friday you drew a snowman and coloured it too. You needed to add some details to your snowman (hat, buttons, scarf, arms, mittens etc.). Your drawing should take up a whole sheet of paper. Using the attached word wall, and descriptive word list write about your snowman. Begin with the first sentence, "My snowman's name is ______________." Then write 3-5 more sentences telling what your snowman looks like. Don't forget to use some descriptive words in your writing (think of size, colour, shape etc). Of course spelling does not count, but use your sounds and phonics rules to spell words as best as you can.
Thursday:
Edit your snowman writing. Use the attached editing sheet and word wall to read through your sentences and find some spots to fix up. Place your finished work in your agenda bag to pass in upon return to school. Please keep them in a safe place. If you need more time to finish this assignment, continue to work on it throughout the week.
Friday:
As you read the visualization sheet, (see above), draw what the sentences are describing. Pay close attention to what you read. In the end your picture should have quite a few details that were written about in the story. Draw and colour on a blank sheet of paper.

Tuesday: Patterns-In a pattern there is a core, the part that repeats. In an AB pattern it is the AB that repeats or is the core. A pattern can be ABC, AAB, ABB and numerous other ways. There is a video attached to watch. Have your student draw the following patterns: AB, ABC, AABB, ABCD and ABCDE. They may use whatever colors/shapes they wish. Please put in your child's agenda to be returned once school is back in person.
Skip counting is also a pattern as the number changes by the same amount each time. Please have your child verbally tell you what the next numbers would be on the attached sheet or write it out for them to add to. You can use the 100 chart at the back of the duo tang to help them solve for the missing number if needed.

(10 min) Visualizing and Using Descriptive Words: This week students will be starting a descriptive piece about a snowman.
Tuesday : Practice visualization and close your eyes and imagine you are eating an ice cream cone. What does it taste like? feel like? smell like? look like? and sound like? Write some words down for each.
Wednesday: Read or read with your child the attached poem. Ask them to write down words that help them to visualize or "see" what is happening in the poem in your imagination.
Thursday: Read the poem again. With a blue or black piece of construction paper use white and light coloured crayons to draw a picture of the poem. You can also use a regular piece of paper and use blue and black to draw the snowman and snow.
Friday: Draw a snowman that has something warm on his head, eyes, nose, mouth, scarf, arms, and at least 2 snowballs tall but no taller than 3. Be creative (you may add a few more details to the snowman), use the whole page. Colour neatly, and do your best work.

Your child can also fill out the activity sheet found in the duo tang to help them record their counting collection. Feel free to send pictures of your child's work to his/her teacher.
Wednesday: Above is a link to a snakes and ladders game for addition to 20. You will need a die and something small to use for tokens, i.e.: coins, macaroni, Lego. Roll the die and move that many spaces. To stay on that space you must give the total for the addition fact on that space. The students may use the 10 frames in their at home duo tangs to figure it out. If you land at the bottom of the ladder you may go up it. If you land on the tail of a snake, you must go down it. The first to arrive at the finish is the winner. If you need this printed for you please let us know.
Thursday: Watch the Word Problem video above. Complete the second word problem in the video above. Complete the third word problem for a challenge. Use paper and pencil, ten frames in the at home duo tang to solve the problems.
